Your roof is one of the most important parts of the exterior of your home, not just because it protects you from the elements but because it can add considerable curb appeal.  So when it comes time to replace your roof it can be exciting as it provides you with the opportunity to completely refresh the look of your home… but it can also be a bit scary as it is a big decision that you will have to live with for a long time.

A few things you should consider before making a final decision …

Colour Coordination – It’s important to keep other colours of your house in mind. Consider what will compliment your current siding, trim, bricks, stone or stucco.  A dark gray or black roof will look good with a gray, white or blue house, while a brown, cream or tan coloured house is better paired with a brown roof.  Choosing a colour that matches your siding or brick too closely might end up making your house look monotone or boring.  Always try to compliment your colours instead of matching them exactly.

The Climate – The colour of your shingles can affect the temperature of your attic, and home, considerably! This can make a big difference in the heating or cooling cost of your home. Light shingles deflect sunlight and help keep temperatures down in warmer weather, while dark shingles absorb heat and help a home stay warm in colder weather. A darker roof can also help snow and ice on your roof melt quicker.

Your Style – What do you want to achieve? Do you want your house to blend in or make a statement? The difference can mean an unusual colour combination or something a bit more traditional.

Dark colours can make a home look smaller while light colours can make a home look larger. The general rule of thumb: If the rest of your home is busy (multicolour brick or stone facades, multiple paint colours), you will want to choose a toned-down roof colour. Too many patterns and colours can overwhelm the eye. However, if your home has a monotone feel to it, a vivid colour can add tremendous curb appeal.

Neighbourhood Concerns – Strata Association and subdivision rules are important considerations. It’s important to know if there are any rules that might affect your decision before you start your project. It’s also nice if your roof doesn’t clash with your nearby neighbour’s roof.
