When it comes to large-scale commercial facilities, roofing and energy efficiency need to work hand in hand. Penfolds Roofing and Solar recently completed a significant commercial project for Flextech, a manufacturing facility with high energy demands, delivering both a new roofing system and a solar installation designed to improve performance, comfort, and long-term cost savings.
Project Overview
The project involved a commercial manufacturing facility with an existing EPDM ballasted roof. Penfolds replaced the original system with a white single-ply PVC roofing membrane and installed a 150-panel solar system on the building.
Flextech operates high-energy cutting equipment, including plasma cutters, which results in substantial electricity usage. Reducing and offsetting energy costs was a key driver behind the decision to invest in solar, while the roofing upgrade addressed both durability and thermal performance.
A Smarter Roofing Solution
The original EPDM roof included heavy river rock ballast and a dark surface that absorbed heat. Penfolds removed the existing materials and installed a new PVC single-ply roofing system with an added insulation layer beneath.
For a building with a footprint spanning multiple football fields, PVC proved to be the most cost-effective and practical solution compared to alternatives such as torch-on roofing. The new white membrane also functions as a cooling roof, helping to reduce heat absorption and create a more comfortable working environment inside the warehouse.
Integrating Solar for Long-Term Savings
Alongside the roofing work, Penfolds installed a 150-panel solar system to help offset Flextech’s high electricity consumption. While the solar installation itself took only a few weeks, coordination with other required electrical work extended the overall timeline.
The client plans to monitor performance over approximately one year and, if results meet expectations, expand the solar installation to the second half of the roof.
Managing Challenges on a Large Commercial Site
The roofing portion of the project began in October, a time of year known for heavy rainfall in the Lower Mainland. Weather planning was critical given the size of the roof and the season. Despite these challenges, the Penfolds crew completed the roofing work in about one month.
Careful coordination, preparation, and experience working in local conditions helped ensure the project stayed on track.
One Team, One Point of Contact
A key advantage for Flextech was working with a single company for both roofing and solar. By keeping the entire project under one roof, Penfolds provided a streamlined experience with one point of contact, consistent communication, and a coordinated approach between trades.
The client expressed strong satisfaction with the outcome and the working relationship developed throughout the project, particularly with Penfolds’ project team over the course of the roofing and solar installations.
A Strong Example of Integrated Expertise
This Flextech project highlights what Penfolds Roofing and Solar does best: delivering large-scale commercial roofing solutions alongside tailored solar installations. By combining both services, Penfolds helped Flextech improve building performance, reduce energy costs, and plan for future expansion, all through a single, trusted partner.
