Q. What can I do to remove the moss from my roof?

A: Most important is that due care must be taken to safety as it is dangerous to walk on a roof without protective equipment. Walking on a roof should be left to the experts including the removal of moss. If a homeowner chooses to do this work themselves they should first identify what the problem is as “moss” seems to be a catch-all phrase. Please read this document “What can I do about moss on my roof” carefully. Very importantly, Penfolds Roofing & Solar does not recommend high pressure spraying of a roof and the subsequent coating. In our opinion this does NOT extend the life of the roof at all. There are several products available from a general Hardware Store but the one Penfolds Roofing & Solar prefers to use is known as “Wash Safe”. Please visit www.wash-safe-canada.com for a comprehensive list of solutions.

Q. My cedar roof is about 10-15 years old. I have been approached by some companies to seal it and I am told it will extend the roof by more than 10 years. Should I do it?

A. This is an option, but we do not recommend it. Our experience has shown that this type of service actually reduces the life of the roof. We recommend that you do not allow anybody on the roof as this may further damage the already existing shakes. If you are unsure, please call us to arrange a free unbiased assessment of your roof.
